School Profile

GEL Limena Hersonissou is an upper secondary public school, situated in the popular tourist resort of Hersonissos. There are approximately 200 students currently studying in three years (A, B, C) aged from 15 to 18. There are 4 classes in year A and 3 in years B and C respectively. Our students are asked to choose a specialised field of study in their third year, namely Humanities, ICT and Economics, Health and Science. Our student body is very diverse in cultural and linguistic backgrounds, as well as learning needs. The majority of our students are fluent in English and at least one more language, while some of them are bilingual. Upon graduating, they are eligible to take part in the University Entrance exams conducted at the end of the school year.

The teaching staff consists of 19 teachers plus two special needs educators who assist students with learning disabilities. There is also a principal, a vice principal, a coordinator of studies and a mentor who acts as a guide to the newer members of staff. Most educators are mid-career and have participated in further professional training and hold postgraduate degrees. We are also fluent English speakers and computer literate.

The school is involved in various projects every year, both on a national and international level. Experiential learning and cooperative work are at the heart of the school’s philosophy and volunteer opportunities are actively promoted.

We are particularly interested in projects on cultural heritage, cultural diversity, sustainability, environmental awareness, digital competences and STEAM. Our region is the perfect destination for cultural visits to main palaces of the Minoan civilisation, such as the palace of Knossos, projects on the protection of the environment, the study of endemic species and marine life, eco-tourism and among other activities. Crete and particularly Hersonisos is an area rich in history and beautiful surroundings, with pristine beaches and forests, ancient monuments and welcoming people.

We would be delighted to collaborate with schools and organisations from across Europe.

Our region

A town that is as old as it is new, located in an area first inhabited in the Minoan era. The area of Hersonissos bears the signs of the past, which are interweaved in the fabric of a modern and vibrant town.

Walking along the shore and gazing at the landscape, you can grasp why the Minoans chose this bay as their port, why the Romans built their theatre here, why the Byzantines constructed their churches by the sea and why the pirates wanted to plunder it.

Today Hersonissos is more than just another Greek town with rich history; it is a glimpse into the future of Greece and Europe. Young people from around the world gather here to party and fill the area with their vibrant energy. The residents welcome them every year and make them feel at home. Migrant workers in search of a better life for themselves and their families have also been welcomed by the local community. All these elements help shape the future of our town as an amalgam of the modern and the new, giving it its multicultural character.
